May Day: Lawan, Fayemi Seek Improved Welfare for Nigerian Workers

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and the Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, have sought improved welfare for Nigerian workers across the country, in commemoration of International Workers’ Day.
According to the Senate President, Nigerian workers from generation to generation have continued to drive economic productivity, nation-building, and democratic governance, with support from the Nigerian Labour Congress.
Lawan, in a statement by his media aide, Ola Awoniyi, said:
“The Nigerian labour movement has a proud heritage beginning from the heroic contributions of its founding fathers like Pa Micheal Imodu and his contemporaries in the struggle for the independence of Nigeria and emancipation of workers and the masses.
“I commend their patience, understanding, and also their resilience in the face of the current challenges that our nation is facing.
“The National Assembly believes in the well-being and welfare of the workers and will always provide legislative support for every effort to tackle their challenges and improve the work environment.”
Similarly, Governor Fayemi assured civil servants that even though the Covid-19 pandemic affected Ekiti State’s accruals from the federal government and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), his administration will continue to make workers’ welfare a priority.
Applauding Ekiti workers’ contribution to the social and economic development of the state, Fayemi said they had demonstrated brilliance and commitment in the implementation of his administration’s five-pillar development agenda.
Meanwhile, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, lamented that the persistent and frightening economic challenges have negatively affected the standard of living of Nigerian workers, adding that the growing rate of inflation has pushed many workers into poverty.
“The Nigerian workers have never had it so bad. The impacts of the lockdown and worsening inflation have taken their heaviest toll on the working class. The situation is so bad that they are now living from hand to mouth,” Atiku said in his statement by his media adviser, Paul Ibe.
