Illiteracy, Impatience Responsible for Motorcycle, Tricycle Accidents - FRSC

Educational illiteracy and impatience are the two major causes of motorcycle and tricycle accidents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other neighbouring metropolis.

These were the words of Samuel Ochi, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the FCT.

Despite being restricted to operate only in the outskirts of the FCT, Mr. Ochi said he could not help but wonder how tricycle and motorcycle operators find their way to the city centre to cause various degrees of accidents which he attributes to their road unworthiness.

He noted that their recklessness has resulted in the loss of lives as well as damages to properties of road users.

Mr. Ochi, however, noted that the FRSC will come down to level of education of the motorcycle and tricycle operators to teach them etiquettes for road use.

“Their level of education is low. We are trying to come down to their level and inculcate some etiquettes of road use in them.

“There is the need for us to come down to their level and educate them on road use so that they can get familiar with what they need to do to avoid road crashes,” Mr Ochi said.

He added that majority of the riders are very impatient and do not wait to read traffic signs before proceeding.

While noting that the FRSC was willing to enlighten them on road use, Mr Ochi said the major challenge is with tricycle and motorcycle unions, which have become so segmented and are now difficult to identify who is in charge.
